THE ADMINISTRATOR: The Administrator's main goal and responsibility is to oversee the day-to-day operations of Carmel Home, and to guarantee that the spirit and purpose of the Home is always maintained. You are welcome to make an appointment with the Administrator, or just ‘pop in’, to discuss questions, concerns, or problems that may arise during your stay here.

ACTIVITIES: Our Activity Department works hard to provide you with activities, outings, and entertainments of interest. Calendars with Personal Care and Nursing Care activities are printed monthly and we encourage you to attend any, or all of them.

A Resident Council Meeting is held once a month. We welcome your input on your activity interests and any other concerns you have.

You are invited to join us on outings as long as you are physically able to participate.

BEAUTY/BARBER SHOP: Carmel Home operates a beauty/barber shop on a regular basis. Services are provided by appointment and you are billed separately for these services.

BUSINESS OFFICE: Our Business Office Manager manages the income and expenses of the Home. The Business Office Manager prepares the monthly statements which include rent for the upcoming month and charges for services and supplies incurred in the preceding month.

DIETARY SERVICE: Our Dietary Department provides three home-cooked meals seven days a week, with therapeutic diets and supplements served when ordered by a physician. The staff follows menus approved by the American Dietetic Association and supervised by a registered dietician. You will be served only what is on your approved diet, with your special likes and dislikes taken into consideration as much as possible.

Carmel Home staffs three dining rooms to meet our residents' needs more effectively. Our dietary personnel also pool their time and many talents to provide treats for our activities and parties.

GIFT SHOP: Carmel Home has a Gift Shop available to Residents, families, staff and visitors. Personal items are available for sale to Residents only, but we have many gift items and Catholic religious books and prayer books which can be purchased by any and all visitors. The procceeds from our Gift Shop sales are used to help support our Sister's missions in Central America.

THE GROUNDS: Carmel Home has 15 acres of lovely grounds, including two parks with gazebo, pathways, beautiful flowering trees, and a shrine to the Virgin of the Poor. You are encouraged to make use of the grounds in good weather. The gazebo and other outdoor facilities may be used for family gatherings or private picnics with prior approval of the Administrator.

Parking for residents and visitors is located in front of the building. You may retain your own car as long as your physician feels it is safe for you to do so. Please lock your car at all times. Carmel Home cannot be responsible for loss or damage to your vehicle.

HOUSEKEEPING: Carmel Home has a reputation of being clean and orderly, and we take pride in this. Housekeepers staff the home seven days a week.

Resident rooms are cleaned weekly on a set schedule. Corridors, lounges, and other areas are also cleaned regularly.

The Housekeeping Supervisor will assist you, when you move in, to place your furniture and other personal belongings so that you feel at home in your new room.

LAUNDRY SERVICE: Carmel Home's Laundry Department does all of the Home's laundry such as sheets and towels. Personal laundry will be done for Personal Care Residents at a charge of $25 per month, if requested, or if a resident is able and capable, they may do their own personal laundry in the laundry area located on second floor. For the Nursing Care level residents the cost of laundry services is included in the basic daily rate.

Our Laundry Department also does mending, altering, and other similar work. For work that is difficult or lengthy a fee will be charged.

For your own protection we ask that you mark EVERY item of clothing, linen, etc. that is yours, even if the Home does not do your laundry. Any unmarked items found in the laundry are kept in the laundry for a period of time until claimed.

MAINTENANCE SERVICES: Our Maintenance Personnel keep both the outside and inside of our Home attractive, safe, and in good repair.

In general they are responsible only for the Home's property and do not repair your personal items such as televisions, etc.

If you are in need of their services please notify the housekeeper on your floor. She will fill out the proper maintenance form to request the work to be done.

NURSING SERVICE: Our nursing staff offers dedicated and loving care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Home employs licensed nurses, medication technicians, and nursing assistants to help meet all of your needs.

Carmel Home is licensed to provide both Personal Care, Nursing Care, and Skilled Care. We currently have 79 beds licensed for Personal Care and 36 beds licensed for the Nursing/Skilled care.

Personal Care Residents are expected to be able to care for themselves in such functions as dressing, feeding, ambulating (although walkers and canes are acceptable), and all other activities of daily living. Assistance with bathing in our whirlpool tubs is provided by trained staff.

Nursing Care residents receive nursing services to meet all their needs, although these residents are encouraged and assisted to remain as independent as possible in their activities of daily living.

REHABILITATION: Progressive Rehab, a privately owned and operated company provides rehabilitation services for our Residents, as ordered by your Physician. These services include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy. Specially trained Carmel Home employees offer restorative services to Residents who are eligible. This program in under the specific direction of a Registered Nurse.

RELIGIOUS SERVICES: Carmel Home is a Roman Catholic facility but is open to all, regardless of faith. Our Chapel is open at all times, and Catholic services are provided daily. A Catholic chaplain is available and, in addition to periodic visits, will see any resident upon request. Protestant services are offered weekly and visits by clergy will be arranged as requested.

Since June of 1995 Carmel Home’s Chapel has been a Chapel of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. Over 200 persons of the Owensboro community participate in this, as well as many Carmel Home Residents. You are welcome to visit and spend time in the Chapel, in silent prayer, anytime of the day or night.

Holy Communion is offered daily to those who are unable to attend Holy Mass. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is offered daily before Holy Mass, and during a special Penitential service each year before Christmas and Easter. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is administered to all Catholic Residents on the first Saturday of each month. Additionally, for the spiritual benefit of our Residents, Eucharistic Adorers, families and visitors we offer a 2-5 day Mission each year in our Chapel.

RESIDENT ADVOCATE: The Resident Advocate is available to listen to, and help resolve, any concerns or problems you or family members may wish to express. She is also available to answer any questions about Carmel Home or assist you and your family with adjustment to the long term care setting.

RESTORATIVE NURSING: Carmel Home’s restorative nursing program is operated in the skilled area of the Home. It is coordinated by a competent Registered Nurse and carried out by trained nursing staff. This program assists individual Residents to achieve and maintain their highest functional level. We encourage our Residents to maintain as much independence as their medical conditions will allow.

SOCIAL SERVICE: Our Social Service Director performs a variety of functions and is available to help you out in many ways. She will coordinate your admission and is available to answer the many questions you will probably have concerning the Home and your living here.
